Creative Teaching

We, at Ashoka, continually endeavour to strengthen the teaching-learning process by incorporation unconventional, innovation forms of schooling. Some of the ideas introduced with this view in mind are

Thinking Routines

Visible Thinking makes extensive use of learning routines that are thinking rich. These routines are simple structures, for example a set of questions or a short sequence of steps, that can be used across various grade levels and content. What makes them routines, versus merely strategies, is that they get used over and over again in the classroom so that they become part of the fabric of classroom' culture. The routines become the ways in which students go about the process of learning.

Team teaching

Team teaching practice is where (two or more) teachers work together in a single physical space. Teachers engage with each other as well as their students to enact their teaching objectives and create and support learning for their students.

Flipped learning

Flipped learning is a pedagogical approach in which the conventional notion of classroom-based learning is inverted, so that students are introduced to the learning material before class, with classroom time then being used to deepen understanding through discussion with peers and problem-solving activities facilitated by teachers.

Innovation For teachers

Teacher Mentorship

The school leadership team (Principal and Vice Principal) have a group of teachers whom they mentor and take care of all their needs and guide them in their personal and professional development.

Tabs for teaching

A collaboration with technology where teachers have their lesson plans, activities, classwork plan, homework plan, HOTS, LOTS and assignments in tab. This is a smarter, more efficient way to execute lessons in the classroom.

Innovation For Students

Collaboration and teamwork

The school has collaborated with the local village school to empower the village school students with the skills of the 21st century through various channels like sports competitions, classroom teaching, science practical sessions and providing them with infrastructure. The collaboration and teamwork is entirely done by the students under the guidance of the teachers.

Emotional sensitivity

The school has a well-established emotional Literacy Program and Happiness Curriculum (designed in-house) to inculcate and measure the skill of flexibility and adaptability. Through such programs, the students are sensitized to their inner self, surrounding and the society.

Leadership

The school has formulated the Students’ Council which monitors the working of various departments like, Housekeeping, Transport, Food and Meals, Safety and Security keeping in mind the needs of their fellow student mates. The Student Council conducts regular meetings with the school management to discuss their observations and communicate their needs and put into place the necessary changes.

Social Responsibility and Ethics

The school ensures that the students are socially responsible citizens. Recently the school has initiated ‘no use of one-time plastic’ project, wherein the students made kullads and entirely discarded plastic cups. In addition, they gifted the kullads to the municipal commissioner office with a view of encouraging their use throughout the city. Awareness rallies, seminars, webinars are conducted for the students. Whatever amount the school collects by organising Arts fests, it donates it to charity. In addition, this year the school hosted a charity program for Kerala Flood Relief Fund and donated Rs. 1,12,000. The entire event was planned and executed by the students. Also “Joy of Giving” is an integral part of the school calendar.

Innovative Initiative

Art fest

Here the students make various articles and sell it to the entire city through an exhibition. The entire amount earned through this festival is donated to charity.

Happiness curriculum

An in-house designed curriculum for developing happy citizens and teaching them the ultimate goal of life. The curriculum has been implemented for the students of Grade I-V.

Sustainable development

One of the branches of the school entirely functions on solar energy. Required quantity of solar panels is set up to provide desired amount of electricity to the building. The same will be implemented in the other campuses soon.

Organic farming is an integral part of the school curriculum, where the students are encouraged to farm and make use of the vegetables they helped plant.

Personality Development program

This includes development of soft skills and 21st century skills through our in-house trained professionals as well as external experts conducting workshops for both students and staff.

Skill Development Program

Our special educators and psychologist, along with the entire teaching fraternity, have developed a Skill Development Program. Identified students are taken through a customised program to enhance specific skills such as speaking, listening, writing, comprehension and calculation, based on their specific needs.

Psychological Development Programs

An in-house psychologist and counsellor helps the students and staff handle their requirements for their emotional and mental well being. There are specific sessions conducted for teachers, non – teaching staff, students and parents.

All inclusive teaching environment

Differentiated teaching techniques are implemented for different learning styles as well as different levels of learners – low, medium and advanced learners.

Leadership Development

A well - structured student leadership body called the “Board of honours” is elected through a structured process. This helps students take up leadership roles and duties at a young age. This not only develops a sense of responsibility, but also accountability.

Emphasis on Holistic Development

In extension to the activities mentioned earlier, the school also provides an opportunity to hone the holistic skills of the students through the after school academy. Here the students can take up any of the indoor and outdoor activities mentioned earlier and work on it dedicatedly.
